Mythical Monday: Christians & Closeness

The idea that the God of the universe is united in oneness with us fragile humans is a complex concept for us to wrap our minds around. Add to that the reality that we often feel distant from God, especially when we make mistakes, and we end up with a religion manufactured doctrine teaching us that if we are more committed, studious, or well-behaved then we can inch closer to God. Jesus prays for us in John 17 that we would be as close to God the Father as He is. So then, how much more Bible study does Jesus need to do to be close to God I wonder? Paul teaches us in Romans 6 & 1 Corinthians 6 that we are fully united to Christ and united as one spirit with the Lord. How can we be distant if we are fully united as one? Are we growing and learning? Yes, of course! As we should. That’s what kids do, we grow up. But that growing has nothing to do with how close we are to God and everything to do with how much we believe and trust in the closeness that already belongs to us. Don’t fall for Satan’s oldest lie, that God is distant and withholding, even if the church teaches it to you.
