Mythical Monday: Ten Commandments

CHURCH MYTHS

1/2/20261 min read

It's a new year and I'm starting a new series which I am calling "Mythical Mondays" where I will be tackling some common church myths with scripture. We are coming out of the gate with a controversial one- the Ten Commandments aren't yours to keep. What? Yeah. In fact, Paul calls them a "ministry of death" (2 Cor 3:7) which, in true Paul form, is pretty harsh. Does he mean that the Ten Commandments are bad or evil? Of course not! He means they don't bring life, and, if they could, there would have been no need for Jesus (Heb 10:2). The truth is, you have a better promise (Heb 8:6), a better motivation, and a better power for your goodness- the Holy Spirit in you! The life force of Divinity which produces living, healthy, and vibrant fruit in you. The greatest of which is love, which, as Jesus says, all the Law hangs on (Matt 22:40). We don't have to try and obey Moses, we have an obedient heart in which Christ lives (Rom 6:17)! Don't get me wrong, the Ten Commandments are great, but the truth is, in Christ, we have it better! Don't settle for a lesser ministry of "don't murder" and instead live out your Spirit nature of "love extravagantly."
